The procedure and method of performing agnihotra was advocated by Shri Madhavji Potdar Saheb during resuscitating work of Vedas. He established Madhavashram which is situated at Sehore road, Bairagarh, Bhopal in the year 1968. The Ashram had about 12 acres of cultivable land of its own where agnihotra farming was initiated for the first time in India . Agnihotra farming system was purely based on Vedic concept and no chemical fertilizers, pesticides weedicides etc. was used in the cultivation of crop plants. Thereafter, thousands of people started doing agnihotra around the world. A few of them in India and abroad as well were farmers and were growing their crops using chemical fertilizers, pesticides etc. started to observe the impact of agnihotra in crop production in their own field. The results were amazing and miraculous Farmers practicing Agnihotra in their field harvested bumper crops free from residual effect of chemcial fertilizer pesticides etc. This was how the agnihotra farming spread over in India and abroad amongst farmers which later on attracted the attention of agril scientists for conducting intensive research work in future.
The basis of Agnihotra farming is the daily performance of agnihotra at the precise time of sunrise and sunset in a pyramid shaped coper or clay vessel. A minimum of one person should. perform agnihotra daily in the centre of the land where the crop is grown. The method of performing agnihotra farming is discussed as under in detail.
Daily practice of agnihotra at sunrise and sunset regularly the centre of the land where crop is grown is a must. Regular Vyahuruti homa followed by Mahamirtunjay yajnya at specifi interval particularly at full-moon day and no-moonday should also necessarily be performed.
In order to perform agnihotra and other yajnya safely, a hut like enclosure of 3x3' in size with a pyramid shaped roof can be prepared in the centre of the farm . Daily agnihotra atleast by one person should be started in the hut prepared for the purpose 5-10 days before preparing the land for sowing. Regular performance of agnihotra and preodical Vyahuruti homa followed by Mahamirtunjay Yajnya would set an active, effective and strong healing cycle in the farm and its environment.
In agnihotra farming system no specific manures, pesticides and weedicides etc. is prepared as is usually done in other organic farming systems. However the use of cow dung manure @100 Kg/ha mixed well with 5 kg agnihotra ash and 5 literes of cows urine is appreciated. This mixture may be spread over the land at the time of pre-sowing irrigation. The land is thereafter ploughed to mix the manure mixutre in the soil. Addition of this helps to maximize the soil fertility by means of increasing the reproductive capacity of earthworms, useful bacteria and other soil borne micro-orgnaisms. This also improves the texture and structure of soil as well as its water holding capacity. The soil is enriched with nutrients life sustaining energies.
The seed used for raising the crop should have compulsorily been multiplied in agnihotra atmosphere by adopting agnihotra farming practices. In other words it is an urgent prerequisite to use agnihotra seed only for sowing. Such seeds should be treated in a solution prepared by mixing agnihotra ash + cow's urine + cow's dung + water in the ratio of 2:1:1:4, respectively, 24 hrs before sowing. The quantity of these deferent components varies as per quantity of seeds used for sowing purpose. Treated seeds should be dried in shade before sowing.
During the practice of soil treatment and seed treatment, vyhuruit homa followed by mahamirtunjay yajnya should necessarily be performed. It is worth to mention here that the practice of agnihotra should remain continue right from preparation of land to harvesting of the crop without any fail.
Treated seed should be sown on either full moon or no- moon day if possible. Quantity of seed for sowing should be as per recommendation as in usual practice of farming. If seed is sown behind the plough, a small amount of agnihotra ash preferably @5 kg/acre should be aided along with the seed for the result of good and fast germination.
5 kg Agnihotra ash+2 Ltr. Cow's urine mixed in 1000 litre of water should be sprayed over the crop at the time of each irrigation during the entire cropping period.
All the interculture operations including weeding, hoeing earthing etc. should be practised as per requirement of the crop. Each interculture operation should necessarily be followed by dusting of agnihotra ash@5 kg per acre to get the crop recovered from the damages due to interculture operations.
The regular practice of agnihotra followed by vyahuruti and om triambakam yajnya will creat healthy atmosphere in the farm The crop thus may be raised free from the incidence of any disease inset and pest following the principle of "prevention is better than cure". 5 kg agnihotra ash+2 ltr. of cow urine mixed well in 1000 Itr of water may be sprayed over the crop regularly at the interval of 15 days.
The grains after harvesting and threshing may be dried well before storing. The grains may be stored making a layer of agnihotra ash at the base, middle and at the top of the stored gains. This will keep the grains free from the incidence of store grains pests. In the usual storage practices many chemicals are recommended to add during storage which may deteriorate the quality of food grains. Use of agnihotra ash in storage of food grains will keep the grains free from any deterioration in the quality of food grains.
During course of unending flow of time, upheavals of passing thoughts and conditions, the extensive science of natural farming practices ordained by Veda became lost and almost extinct. However we have been able to trace the references to the agnihotra farming method in vedic, ayurvedic and other related text dealing with plant like Vriksa Ayurveda etc.
The special group of vedic mantras dealing with the plant kingdom are known as OSHADH or VANASPATI SUKTA or "hymns pertaning to plants". These are chanted by Vedic seers (Rishis) for the health and well being of plants. The enlighted seers looked towards the plant with great love, awe and respect. The plants are regarded as having divine, curative and healing powers. They are treated as intelligent living beings. The seers seek humble permission of a plant before harvesting or cutting even a leaf from it for employment is a herbal combination. The Rishis expressed their feeding of AHIMSA (non voilane) towards plants and pray Oh Ye plant shoot forth in hundred fold leaves as I cut your leaf for curing human disease. If you prosper me men will grow in thousand folds.
Ancient farming practices contain deeper insight into subtle aspects like effect of celestial bodies and constellations, the planetary positions and their relations with plants Details relating to suitable period and constellation for undertaking sowing operations were recorded. The Ayurvedic practices state the relation between lunar phases and the cell sap within the plants. It is stated that the lunar phases increase the level of potency and active principles of medicinal plant increases. The potency of the sap of soma, the rejuvenating plant, it stated to grow steady with the phases of moon in the white half of the lunar month.
According to the vedic method of farming all agricultural operations like sowing, tilling, ploughing etc are ordained to be either commenced or accompanied by Yajnya or chanting of mantras. The harvesting of field is accompanied by Yajnya in which the first farm produce is offered into fire.
Agnihotra is the basic form of Yajnya. It is the process of purification of atmosphere with the agency of fire. Agnihotra utilizesthe comibed effect of various factors involved in its science viz., burning of specific organic substances like cow ghee, rice grains, twigs of plants like VATA, AUDUMBRA PALASH, PEEPAL and BEL etc and thereby injecting the atmosphere with nutrients, the healing efficacy of mantra vibration chanted. These mantras too have a healing and relaxing effect on the atmosphere and all the living beings.
Agnihotra in tuned to circadian bio rhythm of nature viz. sunrise and sunset and it is based on Vedic Science of bio-energy The effects of agnihotra are multidimensional and are of a enormous value. It purifies the atmosphere and in turn the purified atmosphere purifies the prana and mind i.e., life energy. As the prana and mind are interlinked, it automatically unburdens and relaxes the stressed mind.
As an effect of agnihotra, a pure, clean and medicinal atmosphere is created. In this purified atmosphere, all plant particularly medicinal plant thrive. The medicinal and pure atmosphere emanating from burning of specific organic substances, the viberational effect of mantras, uttered in th process, the specific effect of metal copper and pyramid shape of the vessel and finally the exact time of sunset and sunrise, all these factors function simultaneously to produce tremendous healing impact of subtle energies on the atmosphere.
It releases flow of vibrations of love and gives a positive boost to the atmosphere. It heals the atmosphere by injecting it with nutritive elements. Plants grown in this atmosphee naturally resulting in nutritionally excellent crop Fruits and grains taste superior as compared with any normal plant product. It is stated in viedic sciences that effect of agnihotra in terms of subtle energies rises high up towards the space. It gatheres, the nutrients from space and returns to earth in the form of timely, pure, medicinal and nutrition rains. This helps the plant life. Agnihotra regulates the cycle of rains and purifies the water reservoirs. Vedas describe this as Yajnya Chakra i.e, healing cycle. The healing effect of morning agnihotra remains in the atmosphre till sunset but that time when due to changes in the cosmic vibrations, the energy levels on the planet deplete, we perform the evening agnihotra and thereby give the atmosphere a postive through once again. In this way a healthy boost or an injection of nutrition and healthy energies is given to the atmosphere exactly at every sunrise and sunset in the form of agnihotra. In this manner an unbroken healing cycle is set in motion. If the atmosphere is filled with nutrients, the plants become happy. It helps increased numbers of seeds germinated. The period of germination is shortened and the quality of pollen produced is improved Whole reproductive cycle of plant is benefited in the agnihotra atmosphere. An aura type energy field is generated around the plant while agnihotra is performed in its proximity. This gives the plant an ability to maintain maximum growth and yield levels. In agnihotra atmosphere, the metabolic process of plant is speedup: plants mature faster, taste better and are healtheir just by more performance of agnihotra in the farming.
Agnihotra farming is something physical. It interacts with the soil making the nutrients already existing more potent and bio-available. When nutrient are deficient Yajnja process cultivate the growth of nutrients necessary for healthy plant life .
